The Federal College of Education Ilawe-Ekiti, Ekiti State was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in April 2023 to promote the production of qualified teachers at the foundational and basic segment of the education sector. In May 2023 the President His Excellency Mohammadu Buhari approved the appointment of Principal officers for the College.

On November 13 2023, a ministerial team of the Federal Ministry of Education visited the sites {Temporary/Permanent sites} provided by the Ekiti State Government apparently to assess and take over the sites. During this visit, necessary land documents were handed over to the Representatives of the Federal Government. In March, 2024 a team from National Commission for Colleges of Education, Abuja came to the College to conduct resource verification to determine the readiness of College to commence full academic activities.

The National Commission for Colleges of Education  Management considered the reports of team that visited the College between March 25 to 27, 2024 and approved twelve programmes with view to commence full in 2024/2025. Following this approval the Joint Matriculation Board JAMB enlisted the College.
