At the Federal College of Education, Ilawe-Ekiti, green isn’t just a color it’s a lifestyle! The college has taken a bold step in promoting agricultural education through an inspiring hands-on vegetable production project that is already transforming the way students see farming.
On a bright morning, rows of healthy vegetable seedlings sway gently in the breeze, tended by enthusiastic students from the Department of Agricultural Education. From amaranthus and fluted pumpkin to spinach and okra, the demonstration plots are a living classroom where theory meets practice.
Under the supervision of Mrs. Onarinde Christianah, the Lecturer in charge of the course, students are not only learning how to plant and nurture crops they are mastering the art and business of farming. From preparing nursery beds, watering, and weeding, to harvesting and marketing the produce, they gain valuable experience that prepares them for real-world agricultural ventures.
“Our goal is to make agricultural training practical and inspiring,” says Dr. Yahya, Head of the Department of Agricultural Education. “We want our students to leave here with not just certificates, but real skills that can sustain them and contribute to national food security.”
The vegetable production exercise, which began in August and culminated in a successful harvest in September, also emphasizes the use of organic manure, proper crop spacing, and eco-friendly practices. These teach students how to improve soil health, enhance yield, and protect the environment. The harvested vegetables are consumed within the college community and also sold, demonstrating how agriculture can be both educational and profitable.
“Working on the vegetable plots has changed my mindset,” shares Boluwatife Ayodele, a student participant. “I used to think farming was only for older people, but now I see that it’s a business anyone can succeed in with the right knowledge.”
The vegetable plots at FCE, Ilawe-Ekiti symbolize more than growth in the soil they represent growth in knowledge, skill, and purpose. With projects like this, the college is not only producing qualified educators but also future agripreneurs ready to feed the nation and inspire others to see agriculture in a new light.
At FCE, Ilawe-Ekiti, the seeds of success are being planted one vegetable bed at a time!
