At the Federal College of Education, Ilawe-Ekiti, green isn’t just a color it’s a lifestyle! The college has taken a bold step in promoting agricultural education through an inspiring hands-on vegetable production project that is already transforming the way students see farming.
On a bright morning, rows of healthy vegetable seedlings sway gently in the breeze, tended by enthusiastic students from the Department of Agricultural Education. From amaranthus and fluted pumpkin to spinach and okra, the demonstration plots are a living classroom where theory meets practice.
Under the supervision of Mrs. Onarinde Christianah, the Lecturer in charge of the course, students are not only learning how to plant and nurture crops they are mastering the art and business of farming. From preparing nursery beds, watering, and weeding, to harvesting and marketing the produce, they gain valuable experience that prepares them for real-world agricultural ventures.
“Our goal is to make agricultural training practical and inspiring,” says Dr. Yahya, Head of the Department of Agricultural Education. “We want our students to leave here with not just certificates, but real skills that can sustain them and contribute to national food security.”
