About The School

The School of Science, Vocational and Technical Education is one of the pioneer schools of the Federal College of Education, Ilawe-Ekiti, established on 3rd April, 2023 under the administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari. The school commenced academic activities with the admission of its first set of students on 5th May, 2025. It plays a vital role in the College by promoting scientific knowledge, technical skills, and practical training needed for national growth and self-reliance. The school aligns with the College’s vision of providing higher education for NCE graduates through a dual mode degree program that enhances professional and technical competence. The School of Science, Vocational and Technical Education focuses on innovation, creativity, and skill acquisition, equipping students to address real-life challenges, foster entrepreneurship, and contribute to technological advancement. Its academic and vocational programs are designed to produce graduates capable of meeting modern workforce demands and driving socio-economic development. During the maiden matriculation ceremony held on 2nd September, 2025, a total of 212 students were formally admitted into the school, marking an important step toward the College’s goal of nurturing technically skilled, innovative, and solution-oriented educators and professionals for national development.

There are five departments in the School of Science, Vocational and Technical Education and they are:

  1. Department of Integrated Science
  2. Department of Computer Science
  3. Department of Mathematics
  4. Department of Agricultural Science
  5. Department of Business Education

The school offers a blend of well-structured courses designed to broaden the academic horizons of students. These rich course combinations enhance intellectual development, stimulate creativity, and sharpen students’ academic acumen. The various course combinations offered by the School include:

  1. Integrated Science (Double Major)
  2. Integrated Science / Mathematics
  3. Computer Science / Integrated Science
  4. Mathematics / Computer Science
  5. Agricultural Science (Double Major)
  6. Business Education (Double Major)

The Schools of Science, Vocational and Technical Education are endowed with qualified and experienced teaching and non-teaching staff dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, and service. At inception, the schools commenced with 46 teaching staff members and 7 non-teaching staff members. The pioneering Dean of the Schools is Dr. Afolabi Akinjide. Dr. Promise serves as the Head of the Department of Integrated Science, Computer Science, and Mathematics, while Dr. Yah-ya Ibrahim Abubakar is the Head of the Department of Agricultural Science and Business Education. Miss Zainab serves as the School’s Administrative Officer. Together, they provide visionary academic and administrative leadership, ensuring effective coordination and steady growth of the school.

Basic Information about Each of the Departments

Department of Integrated Science
The Integrated Science programme will equip prospective teachers with a broad-based understanding of scientific concepts and processes across biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science. This interdisciplinary approach will help them to appreciate the interrelationship among sciences and promotes effective teaching at the basic education level. The programme will foster scientific literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills necessary for national development. Its objectives include preparing competent and versatile teachers capable of simplifying scientific concepts for learners, enhancing inquiry-based learning, and stimulating students’ interest in science. It will also provide a strong foundation for further studies in science education and contributes to producing teachers who can promote scientific innovation and environmental awareness.

Department of Computer Science
Computer Science, being the foundation of modern innovation and digital transformation, plays a vital role in equipping students with the knowledge and skills required to thrive in today’s technology-driven world. The Computer Science programme is designed to train prospective teachers with strong theoretical and practical knowledge of computing, programming, and information technology. It will prepare them to teach computer-related subjects effectively at the basic and secondary education levels. Its objectives will include producing competent computer science educators capable of integrating technology into teaching and learning, fostering innovation, and promoting ICT development in schools. It will also provide a solid foundation for further studies in computer science and related fields.

Department of Mathematics
The Mathematics programme focuses on developing future educators with strong mastery of mathematical concepts, structures, and logical reasoning. It emphasizes deep understanding of core areas such as algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and mathematical modeling, while integrating modern technology to enhance teaching and learning. The programme aims to prepare teachers who can make mathematics clear, practical, and relevant in a rapidly evolving world. Its objectives include producing skilled educators capable of nurturing students’ analytical and problem-solving abilities, promoting mathematical literacy, and fostering innovation in STEM education. Graduates will be well-positioned to advance research, and inspire future generations to use mathematics in addressing complex societal and global challenges.

Department of Agricultural Science
Agriculture remains the backbone of human survival and economic development, making agricultural education vital to national growth. The Agricultural Science programme is designed to train future-oriented teachers with comprehensive knowledge of agriculture and effective pedagogical skills. It integrates theory and practical experiences in areas such as crop production, animal husbandry, agricultural economics, agricultural extension and agribusiness management. Its objectives include preparing educators who can inspire students’ interest in agriculture, support rural development, and contribute to national advancement through the application of modern and sustainable agricultural education strategies.

Department of Business Education
The Business Education programme is designed to train professional teachers who will effectively teach business-related subjects at various levels of education. The programme provides students with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in accounting, marketing, office technology, management, and entrepreneurship. It integrates modern instructional strategies and digital tools to enhance teaching and learning in business studies. The programme aims to produce competent, innovative, and ethically grounded teachers capable of preparing students for the dynamic world of business and commerce. Its core objectives include developing educators who can promote entrepreneurial thinking, financial literacy, and self-reliance, thereby contributing to national economic growth and sustainable development through quality business education.
